History develops from the deep structures of human existence and shapes the destinies of countries and people. Hence the following quotes:
Polybius (200 BC-120 BC; ancient Greek historian):
“The crowd is capricious and full of unreasonable passions and unbridled rage. It must therefore be kept in check by diffuse images of anxiety and horror.”
The systematic creation of fear as an instrument of power is already very old. It has been further developed and refined using modern mass media in today’s modern societies. The psychic energy of anxiety is diverted from the generators to internal or external goals, so that the anxiety stirred up are directed against those goals through the hatred, anger and indignation. The general demonization of the political opponent takes place while the longing for the powerful and protective leader increases, who has created and spreadthese anxieties through lies distortions and exaggerations.
The American political scientist and former security adviser to the US government under Carter, Zbigniew Brezinski (1928-2017) was a brilliant analyst and fierce opponent of the Republican Bush administration. He wrote the following:
“Terrorized by “war on terror”: “The “war on terror” has created a culture of fear in America. The Bush administration’s elevation of these three words into a national mantra since the horrific events of 9/11 has had a pernicious impact on American democracy, on America’s psyche and on U.S. standing in the World.” … “The phrase is meaningless. It defines neither a georgaphic context nor our presumed enemies. Terrorism is not an enemy, but a technique of warfare – political intimidation through the killing of unarmed non-combatants. But the little secret here may be that the vagueness of the phrase was deliberately (or instinctively) calculated by its sponsors. Constant reference to a “war on terror” did accomplish one major objective: It stimulated the emergence of a culture of fear. Fear obscures reason, intensifies emotions and makes it easier for demagogic politicians to mobilize the public on behalf of the policies they want to pursue”.
(As we now know, it was a lie that Iraq had the alleged weapons of mass destruction, which was later shamefully admitted by several persons among Colin Powell (minister under G.W. Bush) and others.)
