Man is subject to relationship and the separation of time, which constantly separates him from his present that he has ever lived.
Since the human being is a relationship to himself, to others as well as to other things, this relationship structure is inescapable for him and fills his existence. Man, therefore wants to belong, to the family, which is his first relationship after birth, to the group, to a certain culture, to everything to which he relates in his individual life.
The bringing in mind of the separation of relationship is anxiety and therefore the human being does everything possible to maintain connection and community or to fit in. It is the goal for man to realize what he is in the deepest, i.e. relationship. However and whenever.
We have called the highest form of relationship structur as love.
The entire fashion industry is one big, repetitive cry for love!
With global sales of approximately USD 1.5 trillion and the production of over 100 billion individual parts, the global fashion industry (clothing excluding other products) is one of the most important sectors of the economy. In the USA, spending is the highest in the world at USD 1,460 per capita per year. It is the hope of attention and esteem. It is an attempt to appear attractive to others, even to those you don’t know, but you want to be noticed, or at least not excluded, but to belong. Belonging is then sometimes expressed in a special way in certain items of clothing such as uniforms, school uniforms, etc.
This basic structure of the human being is not only addressed in the fashion industry.
Edward Louis Bernays (born in Vienna in 1891 and died in New York in 1995) is considered one of the co-founders of the theory of propaganda, which he later called “public relations”. He was a nephew of Siegmund Freud.
His basic position is: “If we understand the mechanism and motives of groupthink, it will be possible to control and direct the masses, without their knowledge, according to our will.”
One of his books was probably also read by Dr. Joseph Goebbels, the head of propaganda in the Nazi state, who in 1931 expressed himself about propaganda as follows: it should “help in the character transformation of the broad masses”. It therefore serves the purpose and not the truth.
The “American Tobacco Company” commissioned him to increase sales of “Lucky Strike” cigarettes. Public smoking by women was considered taboo in the 1920s. First, he succeeded in getting the fashion industry to first adopt the green tone of cigarette packaging as a trend color, and then he tried to reinterpret women’s smoking as an expression of emancipation. To this end, he described the cigarettes as “torches of freedom”. Thus, the women who identified with emancipation and wanted to belong to this group were promised an identity that in truth had no connection to emancipation. In order to achieve a certain purpose, the women were pretended to have a false identity and since they wanted to belong, they took up smoking.
Of course, such an approach is still an important strategy for influencing and transforming people in many areas today.
After it was established that smoking is extremely harmful to health, the tobacco industry managed to hinder the general will to perceive it for 30 years and to prevent it from arising through purchased expert reports and other measures. By 1970, about 40% of American citizens smoked. In 2022, 13% is expected. According to the CDC, smoking is responsible for about 480,000 deaths per year and about 300 billion in health care costs. Nevertheless, the tobacco industry still uses addiction for its profits.
The will to perceive the harmfulness of the combustion of fossil fuels such as oil and gas was similarly hindered. Shell, Exxon, Total and BP had known about the dangers of climate change since 1971, which clearly identified them through a commissioned, secret study. However, this was concealed for profit interests and on the contrary: facts were denied, and false claims were made. Today, this is no longer possible because the facts are so overwhelmingly clear. But it took more than 30 years for this more than serious problem to be tackled consistently and with finally great commitment. It is very valuable time that was wasted because of lies. Now there will be many deaths due to climate change, which is already well advanced.
